ESPN Investigates 'Gay Porn Wrestlers' Scandal

ESPN Investigates 'Gay Porn Wrestlers' Scandal
"Outside the Lines" segment to profile two college athletes dismissed from squad for porn work.

NEW YORK CITY — ESPN will investigate the dismissal of two college wrestlers from their athletics program for having appeared on amateur porn website. The segment featuring wrestlers Paul Donahoe and Kenny Jordan will air during ESPN's "Outside the Lines" this weekend.
Last summer, Donahoe and Jordan were dismissed from the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers wrestling squad when it was revealed they had appeared in nude photo spreads and solo masturbation vignettes on the all-male amateur website Fratmen.tv.

Both men transferred to new schools. Donahoe enrolled at Edinboro College and joined their wrestling squad, where he enjoyed an unbeaten season and advanced to the NCAA finals before losing in March on a technical violation.

ESPN reporter David Amber "investigates the dismissal of the Nebraska wrestlers for posing on a porn website, and the coaching staff's own cover-ups," the network said.

"The fact that they accepted money to promote their own image as college athletes put them in violation of NCAA regulations," ESPN notes. "Nebraska Coach Mark Manning told 'OTL' that while this particular incident did contribute to their dismissal from the team, they were released for a multitude of reasons."

However, ESPN uncovered "a pattern of leniency within the Nebraska wrestling program. Jordan and Donahoe believe the Nebraska wrestling staff's inability to cover up their much publicized internet appearance was the reason behind their dismissal."

ESPN has released a brief preview of Sunday's program. "We didn't kill anybody. We didn't put anybody in a hospital. We're not selling drugs. We're not bad kids," says Jordan in the preview. "We did some porn. Get over it… We work hard on our bodies, so why be ashamed? I didn't threaten anyone's life. If anything, I'm putting smiles on people's faces."

Google sours on $1 billion AOL investment

Adult Outsourcing Solution

Google acknowledged late Thursday that it may have made a bad bet on AOL.

The search giant said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that its $1 billion investment for a 5 percent stake in Time Warner's Web unit "may be impaired" and that it may have to take a charge in the future:

Based on our review, we believe our investment in AOL may be impaired...We will continue to review this investment for impairment in the future. There can be no assurance that impairment charges will not be required in the future, and any such amounts may be material to our Consolidated Statements of Income.

The December 2005 investment secured a renewal of Google's search advertising deal with AOL, preventing its largest ad partner from defecting to Microsoft. The deal gave AOL a valuation of $20 billion at the time.

Google didn't estimate in its filing what AOL might be worth today, but observers have suggested a figure closer to $10 billion.

Google's deal allows it to demand that Time Warner spin off AOL in an initial public offering of stock or buy back its stake, which would result in a $500 million loss for Google.

Time Warner, perhaps signaling its intention to dispose of AOL to focus on its media business, announced Wednesday that it will split AOL's dial-up unit from its advertising business by early 2009.

The Compex Sport: Shock therapy for workout warriors

reporter's notebook The Compex Sport inflicts intense, deep pain. That's its chief selling point.

A day after riding an exercise bike while wired to the Sport--an $899 device that electrically stimulates and revives muscle tissue that ordinarily wouldn't get activated during exercise--my legs were still sore. To put on pants, I had to crouch down and sort of hop into them, and that was after several stretches. My left bicep, which temporarily got hooked up to the Sport, felt like it would had I entered a one-armed chin-up contest.

And those were the aftereffects. Being hooked up to the machine just for a few minutes made my legs feel as if they had become trapped in a vise. In short, it was scary, but oddly compelling at the same time.

The Sport is the latest piece of athletic gear to migrate from the professional locker rooms to weekend warriors. Skier Alberto Tomba employed electronic stimulation, according to the company, on his way to three gold medals at the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics. It's a fixture in the training rooms for soccer teams like Juventus and Ajax too.

Video: Zapped to glory
Michael Kanellos takes a ride with the Compex Sport.

Compex refashioned its professional device for the consumer market in Europe a few years ago and has just brought it to the States. It's aimed at hobby athletes who don't have time to train as much as they'd like, but still want to outdo their friends or competitors. Slap on the electrodes and that quick training session becomes a full-body experience.

Despite the pain, the device actually reduces the potential injuries, explained Heiko Van Vliet, a European marketing manager for Compex and a coach and trainer who works with the CSC bicycling team and the Norwegian national skating team. Because you don't have to lift large amounts of weights or run an extraordinary large number of miles to get an intense workout, the wear and tear on joints, bones, and cartilage gets reduced.

Regular use over time additionally builds up muscle tissue, which takes more pressure off joints and bones.

"With this, we are able to do in 25 seconds what you have never felt in your life," said Van Vliet. "For professional athletes, it is a must."

And seconds is all it takes. I only did three sets of exercises with my legs during a demo at San Francisco's City Cycle. I did the "resistance" setting for seven 7-second intervals. In this mode, the device sent electric charges through two electrodes every 7 seconds to my quadriceps while I pedaled an exercise bike. The jolt activated the slow-twitch muscle fibers in my thigh. A 30-second (or longer) rest period followed each 7-second jolt.

I followed this with seven 4-second intervals on the "explosive strength" mode, which targets fast-twitch muscle fibers. I then followed with 1.5 minutes on the much mellower "endurance" setting.

The day before the test, I had ridden my own bike approximately 50 miles over several hills, so I'm not that out of shape. Even so, after doing what amounted to less than 3 minutes of actual exercise on the Compex Sport, I was sweating, panting, and howling. Customers coming into the store stared, and then asked the sales attendant what was going on. (Weirdly, after a burst of electricity, you feel fine and can even hold conversations.)

Electrical stimulation essentially works by tricking the body. To get muscles to contract in an ordinary situation, the brain sends an electrical signal to the appropriate nerves, which then stimulate the muscle fiber.

As people age, however, certain neural pathways become predominant. When the brain sends a signal, the same fibers get tickled; the muscles that get ignored begin to atrophy.

"Your body is very efficient. Why should it conserve something that it isn't using?" Van Vliet explained.

An ordinary person who doesn't work out much uses around 35 percent of their muscle mass, while someone who works out somewhat frequently can boost that number to closer to 50 percent, he said. Body builders might use 80 percent to 85 percent.

To excite those dormant fibers, the Sport sends a signal directly to the nerves via electrodes attached to your leg, bypassing the brain all together. It stimulates as many fibers as possible, not just the ones the nerve customarily excites. When the current begins to flow, your muscles immediately jump into a hard mound.

"We can recruit up to 99 percent of your muscle fiber," Van Vliet said. That stimulated muscle tissue is then more receptive to signals from your brain the next time you run or bike in the real world.

The pain first-time users feel after using the Sport comes from delayed onset muscle soreness that comes from doing new activities. (Think of the pain you'd have if, out of the blue, you decided to run every stair in a football stadium.) The more you use the device and exercise those ignored muscles, the more the pain decreases. Kip Potter, who is helping import the Sport to the U.S., hooks himself up to the device three times a week. He can still walk upright.

The amount of current flowing through the device is quite low--in the 20 to 40 milliamp range--said Van Vliet. Anecdotally, it seems correct. For an article in 2004, I volunteered for a hit from a Taser, which emits much higher amperage. It knocked me flat and my hands felt numb for nearly an hour after a 1-second tase.

Even during the longer, 7-second charges inflicted in "resistance" mode on the Sport, I could still talk and move, and hadn't even come close to losing consciousness--a big difference. The level of power is also controlled by the user. (In the video, Van Vliet has it set two-thirds of the way up, relatively high for a maiden voyage.) To shut it off, you can just pull the electrodes off.

But the company recommends working out with a trainer initially.

AEE Day 2: The Show Floor
XBIZ POLL
Do you support Vivid using a 2257-based claim in its lawsuit against Pornotube?

Attend XBIZ Hollywood!
Friday, Jan 11, 2008 Text size:
LAS VEGAS – Day 2 of the Adult Entertainment Expo, at the Sands Convention Center, has a distinctly different flavor than day 1. After the first day, where mostly other trade people in the adult industry traverse the show floor aisles for business and networking, during the second half of the second day the fans enter and the pace picks up considerably.

Teravision CEO Evan Seinfeld chatted with fans and business associates white sitting in the pimped-out Teravision booth. Flanked by his wife and company namesake Tera Patrick along with Sasha Grey, Seinfeld reflected on a great 2007 and told XBIZ he was very happy about recently launching his Iron Cross gonzo label.

Shane’s World star Casey Parker looked every inch the blond surfer girl right down to the longboard, surf wax on her signing table and a cute yellow bikini as she signed autographs in front of a massive Shane’s World-skinned recreational vehicle.

Third World Media provided a different flavor to the show floor with a handful of imported Asian models who were visibly excited to be in Las Vegas to greet their American fans.

The Ninn Worx_SR booth attracted a lot of attention when the company’s contract stars donned their warrior outfits for Michael Ninn’s upcoming epic “The Four.”

AbbyWinters.com also drew considerable crowds when a squad of its flexible all-natural models engaged in a group yoga session. This activity drew the attention of Evil Angel owner John Stagliano who rushed over camera in hand and began directing.

Naughty America’s ubiquitous house booth, replete with white picket fence, now includes a built-out backyard featuring extensive patio furniture. Roxy DeVille made herself at home in one of the bedrooms and invited fans to lay down with her while uber-blondes Puma Swede and Nikki Benz posed on the chrome laden Harley-Davidson in the NA driveway.

Star power was in full effect Thursday: Flower Tucci was camped out at Elegant Angel; Joanna Angel held court at Adam & Eve; Courtney Cummz looked rocker-chic at IMLive.com; Memphis Monroe greeted fans with open arms at Pink Visual; Aubrey Addams looked cute as a button at Red Light District; Savanna Samson was vivacious at Vivid; Gianna Michaels was fiercely hot at Jules Jordan Video and Jenny Hendrix looked every bit the rising star at Evil Angel.

Other companies also opted for a meeting room in AEE’s B2B Marketplace underneath the main hall. Shane’s World, Anabolic, Zero Tolerance, GVA-TWN, Vouyer Media, Metro Interactive and Northstar Associates conducted business in the meeting lounges down below.

With two measured days now in the books, show organizers and exhibitors hope days 3 and 4 provide the expected frenetic pace.

Adult Outsourcing Solution

Update (December 10, 2007 3:30 PM PST): Rogers has now publicly confirmed the activities described below.

Greetings. Please observe closely the image to your left, showing the home page for Google Canada (click the image for a full-sized, full-resolution version).

Does anything seem a bit odd about the normally clean and pristine Google front door? What the blazes is all that ISP-related verbiage taking up the top third of the page? Why would Google ever give an ISP permission to muddy up Google's public face that way?

Well, as you've probably already guessed, Google didn't give this ISP any such permission. The ISP simply decided to modify Google on their own, demonstrating a real world example of ISPs Spying On and Modifying Web Traffic that I was discussing yesterday.

Just brought to my attention today by a concerned reader who chose Google for his example, what you're looking at is reportedly an ongoing test by Rogers in Canada, scheduled for deployment to Rogers Internet customers next quarter.

In case you're curious, "ISNS" on the test Google interception page apparently stands for Internet Subscriber Notification System. For the morbidly curious, here's the javascript and associated code that enables this procedure, which can presumably be applied to any http: (unencrypted) traffic.

While Rogers' current planned use for this Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and modification system (reportedly manufactured by "In-Browser Marketing" firm "PerfTech") is for account status messages, it's obvious that commercial ISP content and ads (beyond the ISP logos already displayed) would be trivial to introduce through this mechanism. By the way, PerfTech is even using Google for one of its linked promotional examples on the PerfTech home page. I wonder if they bothered to ask Google's permission for that?

Anyway, the fact that there's an opt-out present for future account status messages on the Rogers page insertions hardly changes the extremely problematic and network neutrality unfriendly aspects of such situations, as I noted in yesterday's blog item.

Question: Will Web service providers such as Google and many others, who have spent vast resources in both talent and treasure creating and maintaining their services' appearances and quality, be willing to stand still while any ISP intercepts and modifies their traffic in such a manner?

I can't say for sure of course, but I suspect that a likely reaction might be discerned by paraphrasing Bugs Bunny: "Eh, he don't know them very well, do he?"

Search engine traffic is by far my favorite type of traffic; it’s free, the users convert well to sales and advertisement clicks, and you can work towards goals like ranking for specific keywords. In this case study I will explain every step I have taken to bring www.NarutoWallpaper.biz from 0 to 400 search engine visitors per day in just over one month.

Google Analytics Keywords Report
Keyword Research

If you are hoping to receive traffic from search engines, you need to be targeting keywords which people actually search for - the tool I prefer to use for keyword research is Keyword Discovery. Before deciding to the buy the domain www.NarutoWallpaper.biz I only knew that I wanted to develop a website providing wallpapers so I searched for the term ‘wallpapers’ in KeywordDiscovery. The most searched for ‘wallpapers’ phrases are ‘wallpapers’, ‘anime wallpapers’, ‘psp wallpapers’, ‘free wallpapers’ and ‘naruto wallpapers’.

Keyword Discovery Keywords

Targeting the keyword ‘wallpapers’ might seem appealing with 500,000 searches per month but it will be highly competitive, I like to choose topics with moderately high searches but reasonably low competition. To find out the competition of each key phrase I search for the phrase in Google and look at the ‘Results 1 - 10 of about 2,230,000 for naruto wallpapers’ section. For the top 5 key phrases listed above, ‘wallpapers’ has 88 million competitors - far too many, ‘free wallpapers’ has 8 million - a bit much, and ‘anime wallpapers’ ‘psp wallpapers and ‘naruto wallpapers’ have 3 million - decent. Anime, PSP and Naruto have nice searches per month with achievable search engine rankings since the phases aren’t enormously competitive. Of the three I chose ‘Naruto Wallpapers’ since it seems interesting.

Based on the niche I decided on above I bought the domain www.NarutoWallpaper.biz. Having the target keywords in the domain is nice and has some SEO benefit.
More Keyword Research

Each of the sub-pages must target other key phrases within the niche so I return to KeywordDiscovery and this time rather than search for ‘wallpapers’ I search for ‘naruto wallpapers’. The results this time give you ideas for what pages you should create. Naruto is a cartoon series so I created sub-pages for each character in the series, once again searching in KeywordDiscovery for ‘(character name) wallpapers’. Each time I want to create a new sub-page I find the optimal keywords to target through KeywordDiscovery.
Optimizing the Pages

After you’ve decided on the target key phrases for your pages you should make sure then each page includes its respective key phrase in the page title, the URL and the page content. The website I developed for www.NarutoWallpaper.biz is database driven so each wallpaper has a separate sub-page with an auto-generated page title, ‘(character name) wallpaper’.
Getting Indexed

Once the website is up and running you will want to have the pages included in the search engines, to make things simple I will refer to just Google. Google doesn’t index your website unless it finds other websites linking to it, I will discuss building backlinks in the next section. Google does have a submission page but I see no good reason to use it; if you have backlinks you will be added to the index automatically.

Having backlinks pointing towards your website will get your homepage indexed along with some sub-pages but to get all of your sub-pages indexed you should create a sitemap, a sitemap is a file listing all of your pages. There are two main types of sitemap, the HTML Sitemap and the XML Sitemap, both will help to get all of your sub-pages indexed but I prefer the XML Sitemap. After you’ve created your sitemap you should submit it to Google Webmaster Tools to help them find your sitemap.
Building Backlinks

As I said above, building backlinks will help to get your pages indexed but the main benefit of backlinks is that they improve your search engine rankings. The benefit of a backlink depends mainly on two things, the quality of the website linking to you and the anchor text of the link. As an example, in the link Naruto Wallpapers ‘Naruto Wallpapers’ is the anchor text so this backlink will help the website I am linking to rank for the key phrase ‘Naruto Wallpapers’.

To build backlinks to a new website I start by contacting similar websites asking if they would like to link to your website or if they would like to exchange links with you. To find potential websites to contact I search Google for something like naruto inurl:contact.php. Each related website that links to you helps to boost your search engine rankings.

Another method of backlink building is blog commenting or forum posting, if your website is relevant to the discussion you can give your link. Make sure you only display your link if it useful though, otherwise it is spam.

Social bookmarking websites like Digg and StumbleUpon can also provide backlinks. Social bookmarking can also be a good traffic source if your website is very useful or interesting.
Wait, Wait, Wait

As you saw in the first image it took 1 week for www.NarutoWallpaper.biz 1 week to start receiving traffic from search engines and 3 weeks to see any substantial traffic. This is nothing to worry about, it’s because the search engine spiders take a while to find all of the backlinks pointing towards your website although some people may blame this delay to the sandbox effect, I don’t believe in the sandbox effect, I think it’s simply a delay while the spiders find the backlinks. While you’re waiting you might like to create some more keyword targeted content.
Statistics and Traffic Tracking

To find out which keywords are bringing you visitors a tracking program is necessary, my two favorite programs are AwStats and Google Analytics both of which are free. The first image was part of the Google Analytics package.

As you can see in the first image, the main key phrases bringing me traffic are ‘naruto wallpaper’, ‘naruto wallpapers’, ‘akatsuki wallpapers’ and so on. Once you know which key phrases are bring in the traffic you will want to find out what you rank for each phrase, to do this I use the Digital Point Keyword Tool which lets you track your rankings on a daily basis. If you find a keyword ranking in the top 11-20 you should work to improve your rankings for this term, you will receive far more traffic for a top 10 ranking than a rank 11-20 and there’s not a huge amount of work involved with improving from rank 11-20 to top 10. At the moment I am ranking 11-20 for ‘Naruto Wallpapers’ so once I reach top 10 the search engine traffic will increase a lot.
Repeat

Once the above steps are complete the only thing left to do is repeat them until you reach your desired rankings and traffic. Do further keyword research and create new sub-pages based on this research, keep optimizing your pages and keep building backlinks to the homepage and sub-pages. If your website is of high enough quality your backlinks will grow naturally, you won’t need to do much more backlink building.
